MEN INVOLVEMENT WITH A GENDER TRANSFORMATIVE APPROACH TO END FGM

Webinar – Tools for Promoting Men’s Involvement for Sustainable Change in to tackle FGM and GBV

On December 6th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM CET, COP FGM organised a webinar presenting the Tools for Promoting Men’s Involvement for Sustainable Change in to tackle FGM and Gender-Based Violence.

As a reminder, the main theme of this year at the COP was men’s engagement for a truly gender-transformed society. When we began exploring this theme, we started by understanding masculinities and how norms associated with masculinities can positively or negatively impact a community. We then discussed sustainable men’s involvement to end FGM and the Community Transformative Gender Approach (CGTA) to end FGM and GBV, aiming for a national change in power relations between men and women and a reduction in FGM and GBV.

Through all the exchanges that have taken place throughout the year, we have highlighted a process for working with men to bring about lasting change in the fight against FGM and GBV, which involves several stages, including:

  1. Working on Masculinities: Promoting a positive masculinity model, dismantling injunctions to the hegemonic model, co-constructing alternative ways to conceptualize masculinities, and reflecting on the role of men as allies in the fight against FGM.
  2. Involving Men with a Transformative Gender Approach: Working on masculinities with a transformative gender approach to instigate profound change.
  3. Community Transformative Gender Approach: Giving special attention to communities, promoting inclusion, participation, empowerment, and autonomy to create sustainable changes in social norms and power structures, particularly concerning FGM.
  4. Myth Demystification: Emphasizing how to involve men to end female genital mutilation by demystifying false myths about the roles of men and women in these practices and equipping actors in the field with key points on what to do or not to do when working to involve men.

Each thematic discussion generated a tool, and this webinar was an opportunity to look back at these different tools.
